Time for a New Story?

The first thing I do when a client comes to work with me for the first time is I uncover their story. The narrative they repeatedly tell themselves of who they are and what they deserve.

Most clients don’t even realise they have a story, but they all do….We all do.

I’ve developed a method over the years for uncovering stories quickly and easily. It’s where I always start. It’s the basis of everything. Uncovering your story is a revelation to most people. The reason for this is it’s so much easier to see other people’s stuff than our own. Most of us have a blind spot when it comes to seeing and understanding ourselves and why we do things…why we get the results we get.

It’s so much easier to have another person hold a mirror up for you.

This is why Coaching, Alcoholics Anonymous and Slimming World are all generally so successful. It’s often hard to make major change alone. We can’t see our own blind spots.

The story of who you TELL yourself you are and who you REALLY are often completely different.

Your story was GIVEN to you when you were a child. By your parents, your teachers, your older siblings, other kids, authority figures and society. You had practically NOTHING to do with what went into your story. You were just a little sponge who soaked it all up and has been living by it ever since.

You could be in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s or beyond now, but 95% of your habits, beliefs and most importantly results are coming from that story given to you in your childhood.

If you were dyslexic or really struggled at school you may have a story that you’re stupid or lack intelligence so you don’t deserve a great career or financial success and that’s simply not true. Richard Branson is dyslexic and we all know how well he’s done in life!

If you were a very sensitive, emotional child but you grew up in a cold, unemotional family you may have a story that it’s wrong or bad to be too emotional so you bury those emotions as much as you possibly can, feeling shame for them and making yourself very unhappy in the process. You may have even developed an addiction in an attempt to numb yourself from this unhappiness.

If you were sexually abused as a child (estimates suggest this is 1 in 4 females and 1 in 3 males) you may have a story that you are damaged, bad or wrong in some way because of what happened. When the reality is you were just an innocent young victim who did nothing wrong. Sadly you may have kept this a secret your whole life for fear of others judging you if they find out.  Carrying this shame, when it wasn’t yours to carry.

If you didn’t receive the love that you needed as a child because your Mum was too busy or too depressed or too young when she had you. you may have a story that you are unworthy of love, you are unlovable and you’ll go through your life sabotaging every relationship you ever have because you don’t believe you deserve it. How sad that you couldn’t enjoy all the love that was rightfully yours.

You are NOT responsible for what happened to you in your childhood. Luckily you survived whatever happened to you and you’re here to fight another day. You ARE responsible for what happens to you now though. The future starts NOW.

Throw away that old story. It’s time for YOU to decide YOUR story now.

You need an uplifting, empowering, wonderful story that inspires and encourages you. That helps you to grow into the person you were always meant to be. You’re no longer that child; you are a conscious, aware adult.

It’s time for YOU to decide how your life turns out.

It’s time for YOU to decide what results you’re going to get.

It’s time for YOU to decide how much love you’re going to let in.

It’s time to draw a line under the past, no matter what age you are, and decide that the future starts here, today, with whatever story YOU want to give it.

No matter what kind of parenting you had you can now parent yourself with whatever you need.

You can heal those wounds from the past. It’s time to let go.

Change your story and you change your ability to cope, deal with and transform the things you don’t like.

Change is possible no matter your age or previous circumstances. You can have a growth spurt at any age.

REAL change comes from the inside out.

Let me help you illuminate those blind spots. Let me guide you in finding your TRUE story. The story of who your REALLY are. The true, genuine, authentic version of you you were always meant to be.

Book a call.

Much Love

PS: This blog has nothing to do with Ireland but I couldn’t let St Patrick’s Day slip by this week without some reference to it. This was for you John Hetherington. Happy St Patricks Day xx
